Documentary Storyboards

by Eric Walter on January 28, 2010

Here are a selection of storyboards that I just completed for the upcoming documentary film. I used a mixture of graphite and marker to give them a gritty texture and gray atmosphere. The majority of these drawings will be included in our presentation to possible investors. The main point is to visually communicate the opening sequence of the film.

I’ve found preparing for this project to be educational in many ways. I’ve described much of what I’m doing as “trying to make a film backwards”. Backwards from what I’m accustomed to, that is. Mainly because with this documentary, our outcome is unknown. In many ways, it’s in the hands of the interviewees and their memories. My job is to provide the framework, structure and vision to control the chaos.

Equally challenging, any recreation sequences within the film will not be finalized on paper until all interviews and reality-based footage has been shot. So, much of what I’m doing right now is building sequences and creating situations in which to place key witnesses throughout the film.
